And so it's been determined... January was the warmest on record here in Grand Forks:
JANUARY 2006 WAS THE WARMEST JANUARY ON RECORD AND IN FACT BLEW AWAY THE OLD RECORD BY 2.6 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS 21.3 DEGREES OR 16 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL AT THE GRAND FORKS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT FOR 2006. THE PREVIOUS WARMEST JANUARY OCCURRED IN 1990 WHICH AVERAGED 18.7 DEGREES. SURPRISINGLY NO INDIVIDUAL DAYS IN THE MONTH HAD ANY RECORD HIGH OR LOW TEMPERATURES.
Cloudy skies were the main culprit, as they didn't allow low temperatures to drop much through a good part of the month. We saw 29 days of either partly cloudy or cloudy skies, an average RH of 87% and experienced 23 days of fog. The polar front remained well north of us, as well, allowing for warmer temperatures...
What's amazing is that even though we came out of January with the warmest average temperatures ever recorded, we still have snow on the ground. Our greatest snow depth of the month (9 inches) was observed on the 30th - from this past weekend's snowfall. Our greatest 24-hr snowfall also occurred last weekend... When 2.9 inches fell at the airport on the 29th.
Let's not hope the spring/summer compensates with the coolest temperatures ever. Personally, I'm looking forward to those 80° and 90° days.
