It's the end of a day-full of Major League Baseball... And I couldn't be in a better mood. Well, okay - maybe if the Cubs would have actually came out of their game with that white flag flying in center field.
Either way, I missed most of the early afternoon action since I worked the day shift today. The rain delay worked to my advantage, as I was able to catch most of the second half of the Cubs/Brewers game. It turned into a pitcher's duel through much of the game as Sheets and Fantastico matched each other through much of the game. A run didn't score until the 9th, when Kerry Wood came in for relief. It's never a good omen to hit a batter on your very first pitch of the season. It quickly went downhill for Wood from there. He ended up allowing three runs. Gagne came in for the bottom of the 9th to save it for the Brewers and given his record over the past couple of years in Boston, I felt optimistic. A single and a walk, however gave some life to Wrigleyville and when Fukudome worked the count to 3-1, he turned on a fastball and drilled it into the right-center seats.
Yet another reason to never take numbers during Spring Training seriously.
Fukudome had hit only around .200 for the spring and seemed to take the transition to American ball a little slow.
Opening Day, 2008 was much different for him. He went 3 for 3, with a single, double, and home-run. Add to that a walk and a stolen-base attempt. He was caught stealing, but at least he's running.
They have the day off tomorrow, but play again on Wednesday to begin a 5-game homestand with Milwaukee and Houston.
Ahhh, baseball season... Gotta love it!
